Saab working on diesel hybrid?

Filed under: Hybrid, Technology, Saab, DieselA reporter from Sweden's Automobil was returning a Saab 9-5 to the factory in Trollhättan when he stopped at a gas station to fill the tank. And what did he spy with his little eye? A 9-3 Sedan also pulling up to the pumps, with a trunk full of batteries. When the car started up, the reporter realized that said 9-3 was also powered by a diesel engine. This has all led to speculation that Saab has picked up its previous work on a diesel hybrid powertrain.

Three years ago, in November 2007, some scribes visiting the same factory got an engineer to admit that General Motors and Saab were working on a diesel hybrid. The engineer said that "We will get everything to work together. With the next generation of hybrid we can lower the fuel consumption up to 40 percent. This is possible with the use of more electricity." Peugeot has a diesel hybrid coming in early 2011. It will be interesting to see if Saab could get in front of that wave and reap the benefits instead of playing catch-up.

Costumed Kids, Drunken Drivers and Other Halloween Hazards

For a fun holiday, Halloween sure can be scary. The combination of costumes, kids and parties can be dangerous for pedestrians and drivers alike. Allstate reports that in California, the number of people hit by cars jumps 25 percent on Halloween versus the rest of October. It's a 22 percent increase in Texas, Allstate says. Because the holiday falls on a weekend this year, there are likely to be more Halloween parties and more risks of drunken driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is highlighting the dangers of drinking and driving at Halloween with an "arresting" public-safety campaign.

The most obvious Halloween safety tip is to stay sober and vigilant while you're driving this weekend. After the jump are some more specific suggestions from Allstate, Geico and Edmunds.

With nearly three months to go before the auction, you can bet there'll be plenty more interesting vehicles on their way to Arizona for the event. Ford Launches Electric Vehicle Information Website

Ford has launched a new website aimed at educating consumers about hybrids, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles. The site offers informative videos, diagrams and bullet points highlighting the strengths of each engine configuration. "We know consumers are excited about the variety of electrified vehicles coming to market over the next two years, but we have heard many of them say they don't truly understand the differences between these options," Nancy Gioia, Ford's director of global electrification, said in a press release. "Educating consumers on electrified vehicle options will be crucial to satisfying their needs as they decide whether to buy a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or pure battery electric car."

With the website, Ford is laying some groundwork for its upcoming electric vehicles. Ford will release an all-electric Transit Connect van this year. A Focus electric car is coming in 2011. 2012 will bring two hybrids powered by next-generation lithium ion batteries. Also in 2012 is a plug-in hybrid. Visitors to the site will also find a list of Ford's currently available hybrids and a link to Ford's incentives page.

2011 Nissan Leaf real-world range test covers 116.1 miles

2011 Nissan Leaf - Click above for high-res image gallery

Initially, Nissan quoted the Leaf's estimated range at an even 100 miles. From the beginning, we knew that this number was more or less an average of what the car could travel between charges and not a figure that was set in stone for all drivers on any given day. Recently, the automaker laid out some variable range estimates that took weather variations, speed, HVAC settings and more into account. These showed that the Leaf's operating range could drop as low as 47 miles and top out at 138 miles under ideal circumstances.

Real-world results are usually a better indicator than drawn-up estimates, however, and Plugin Cars writer Nick Chambers was recently given the chance to conduct a total range test of the battery-powered Leaf. Chambers plotted a course from Nissan North America's headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee to the famous Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg. The 116.1-mile drive took Chambers across country roads, through small towns flooded with stoplights and onto local byways. Chambers claims that he didn't drive aggressively and often stayed below posted speeds, but did not baby the Leaf "like an obsessed hypermiler" might have.

In the end, the Leaf made the trip; that's 116.1 miles traveled under real-world conditions. The range-testing run utilized around 22.76 kW of the Leaf's total 24 kWh battery, indicating that it was pushed to the limits. Surprisingly, Chambers claims to have called upon the cool air of the range-depleting A/C system for much of the journey. He also engaged the Leaf's range-boosting Eco-mode before starting his jaunt, giving us a decent prediction for what a green-footed driver can expect.

RK Collection Toyota Camry is a little bit NASCAR and a little bit SEMA rock and roll

RK Collection Toyota Camry NASCAR Edition - Click above for high-res image gallery

After showing off the Tacoma RTR Concept, we didn't think Toyota could find another way to toy with our emotions. We were wrong. Rob Kauffman, the owner of RK Collection and co-owner of Michael Waltrip Racing, has teamed up with Toyota Racing development to produce a street-legal, NASCAR-inspired high-performance Camry.

Those words don't seem like they should go together, but the parts list for the RK Collection Toyota Camry NASCAR Edition reads like the shopping list for a potential dream car. The most important piece of that list sits under the hood: a 358 cubic inch TRD NASCAR V8 engine producing 680 horsepower, which is paired with a Tremec T56 six-speed manual transmission.

It's as if Rob Kauffman was reading our dreams and then built the most exciting Camry on the planet. The RK Collection Toyota Camry NASCAR Edition will be waiting for our cameras (and our hearts) at the rapidly approaching SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Hit the jump for the press release.

Suzuki recalling SX4 models for faulty side view mirror screws

2010 Suzuki SX4 by RoadRace Motorsports - Click above for high-res image gallery

Suzuki has recalled almost 70,000 SX4 models, including a handful built in 2007 as well as those constructed between 2008 and 2010. The recall centers around faulty screws that are used to attach the vehicles' side view mirrors. Over time, vibrations can cause the screws to loosen and the mirror may fall off. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, if that happens, a lack of visibility may lead to an accident.

While Suzuki has not yet come up with a repair schedule for the issue, the company says that replacement screws are being shipped to dealers right now, and that the problem will be taken care of free of charge. Owners can contact their local Suzuki dealer for more information. Hit the jump for the company's statement on the recall.

These Garmin models may have a defect that causes some battery types to overheat and pose a fire hazard. This recall does not apply to the any of the Volvo factory installed navigation systems.
According to a U.S. Volvo spokesperson, models affected by the recall are: Volvo S80 2000-2011, S60 2001-2009, V70 2000-2011, XC70 2001-2011, XC90 2003-2011, S40/V50 2004-2011, C30 2007-2011, C70 2006-2011 and XC60 2009-2011. Aston Martin Lagonda SUV green-lighted after all?

Aston Martin Lagonda Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

Another day, another change in the winds surrounding the Aston Martin Lagonda. After last month's revelation that the high-riding Aston would remain nothing more than a bad dream for fans of the brand, Ulrich Bez, Aston Martin CEO, recently let it slip that the crossover had been given the green light. The luxury utility is slated to ride on the Mercedes-Benz GL platform, but the company is keeping drivetrain details to itself for the time being.

The Lagonda Concept debuted at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show and has since existed under a hail of disparaging comments from journalists and enthusiasts alike. Last month, Aston Martin owner David Richards officially announced that the project would be scrapped. And while there was much rejoicing at the time, it appears the Bez sees dollar signs in the mega-buck crossover market, pedigree be damned.

He may not be far off of his mark, either. Porsche famously stepped into the SUV market with its Cayenne and has been laughing its way to the bank ever since. It wouldn't surprise us if Bez and the rest of the Aston Martin crew are hoping for a similar performance.

Barring a last-minute hitch, it looks like Ford and Mazda will soon be severing the ties that have bound them for the last four decades. Though the U.S. maker has yet to issue a formal confirmation, it's negotiating a deal that would have it sell off most or all of the remaining 11 percent stake it holds in its Japanese affiliate.

It appears that Mazda is as eager as Ford to go its own way.
No, it isn't a bitter divorce. Ford and Mazda will likely still maintain some ties - in Thailand, for example, where their suburban Bangkok plant has just begun producing an all-new generation of compact pickup trucks, including the Ford Ranger. But the two makers are already unwinding their manufacturing alliance in booming China.

And, perhaps most importantly, they'll likely curb future product development programs that helped both companies squeak through the hard times of the not-too-distant past. One of the earliest examples of that alliance was the old Ford Escort, the U.S. maker's first attempt to build a so-called "world car."

More recent examples include the B-car platform that eventually went on to become both the Ford Fiesta and Mazda2. Conventional wisdom is that these are virtually identical subcompacts - but as I was reminded during back-to-back drives this past week, there's a surprising amount of difference between the American and Japanese production vehicles. Though they may have started out working together, the two companies soon branched off, yielding some surprisingly different results in terms of design and, more importantly, driving dynamics.

Report: Twin-turbo, carbon-titanium Pagani C9 being developed for U.S. market

Pagani C9 testing mule - Click above for high-res image gallery

We've seen more than our fair share of spy shots over the past couple of years showing test mules for the much-anticipated successor to the Pagani Zonda. What we've been lacking on, however, are details of the car's specifications. Now Britain's Autocar weekly claims to have the inside scoop on how the supercar codenamed C9 is shaping up, and it's looking good.

First of all, the engine: Mercedes AMG is once again developing the Pagani's powerplant. But whereas the current Zonda's V12 is naturally aspirated, the new unit - thought to be derived from the SL65's - is tipped to carry twin turbochargers. That should help the C9 churn out some 700 horsepower and 730 lb-ft of twist - considerably more than the current model.

All that muscle is reported to be transmitted to the rear wheels via an X-trac seven-speed sequential transmission, all the while reducing carbon emissions by half. That'll make the C9 - or whatever it's called when it finally hits the market - Euro 5 compliant, but that's not all. Autocar says Pagani is developing the car specifically to meet American federal regulations, meaning that the C9 will be sold Stateside whereas the current Zonda could not.

Construction is expected to take advantage of the carbon-titanium weave that Pagani developed for the ultra-exclusive Zonda Cinque, keeping weight down to around 2700 lbs. Production is supposedly to expand to 40 units per year, but Autocar expects that, despite similar pricing and a big improvement in performance, the current Zonda will continue to be built to order alongside the new model.

Aston Martin One-77 does the 'Ring again - Click above to watch video after the jump

Today's word from the audio dictionary is "Bellow," one of whose verb forms is defined as "a loud deep sound, as of pain or anger." We're going to be on the side of angry today.

But you can't really understand those words until you watch, and listen to, the latest video of an Aston Martin One-77 (the infamous Dirty Shirley, perhaps?) testing its chops and its pipes at the Nürburgring. Along the way it runs down other 'Ring runners like an R8 and a Ford Focus, but it's likely all they registered was a blur and a bawl. Perhaps even a bellow, if you will. Follow the jump for the aural treat.

Chrysler Revamps the 2011 Dodge Avenger and Dodge Grand Caravan

Chrysler's formula for the revamp of its 2011 lineup has been simple yet effective: Refresh the exterior, redo the interior, throw in LED taillights and top it off with a Pentastar V6. The 2011 Dodge Avenger and Grand Caravan are the latest vehicles to undergo these updates.  The Avenger's changes are minor on the outside, with new taillights and a revised front bumper being the most obvious ones.
Performance updates include a new six-speed transmission for the 2.4 liter, four-cylinder engine, a retuned suspension and an available 283 horsepower Pentastar V6. On the inside, the Avenger gets an all new interior with better quality and softer touch materials, a new steering wheel and extensive use of sound-deadening materials. According to Chrysler, this damping help make the vehicles one of the quietest in its class.

Volvo Models Latest To Be Affected By Garmin Nav Recall

As part of Garmin's recall of certain portable navigation devices that has already affected Suzuki and Nissan owners, Garmin is now asking Volvo owners who have a dealer installed Garmin nuvi 760 and 765 navigators to visit the Garmin recall page and check their serial numbers.
This is basically the entire Volvo line-up save the 2011 S60, as the system could be fit to any car. There are no reports of any injuries or fires due to this issue, and Garmin is responsible for handling all battery replacements, which are not available via your local Volvo dealership.

Are you the U.S. widebody Mitsubishi i-MiEV?

U.S.-spec Mitsubishi i-MiEV renderings - Click above for high-res image gallery

Mitsubishi will be launching its all-electric i-MiEV in the United States next year, though it will be substantially updated from the current model sold overseas. In addition to a slightly wider shape, we can expect better interior amenities with more creature comforts and a higher level of fit and finish.

We've stumbled upon one of Mitsubishi's business plan presentations on the automaker's global corporate site, and therein lies two renderings of what the upgraded U.S.-spec car might look like. It appears that the too-cute bubbly proportions of the current i-MiEV will remain intact, albeit with a much more aggressive front fascia and wider track. As we noted in our review of a JDM-spec i-MiEV, added width would indeed make the diminutive hatch feel more planted on the road, and while we rather like the design of the current car, the revised styling is sure to be more attractive to the vast majority of U.S. shoppers.

Look for the production U.S.-spec i-MiEV to debut sometime next year. Mitsubishi is still targeting a price of under $30,000 (not including government incentives) when the car hits dealerships at the end of 2011. Hat tip to Ryan!

Pick of the Week: 2010 MINI Cooper Convertible

Retro-styling and nostalgia are great tools to get consumers to notice your vehicle by tugging at their heartstrings with fond (though perhaps clouded) memories of times past. This approach has lead to amazing initial sales success for models like the VW New Beetle, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Mazda Miata. But with few exceptions, the initial excitement and fervor eventually wears off, with sales numbers following suit. Manufacturers are usually left with having to place incentives on those once hot-selling vehicles.
The Mini Cooper has generally managed to defy this trend, even eight years after being reintroduced to the US market. While dealers can no longer command premiums over MSRP, or even MSRP for that matter, incentives on the Cooper have never been excessive and it has remained relatively popular. However, as we move into colder months, convertibles become less appealing to car buyers. With 2011 Coopers coming in, Mini has placed a major incentive on the Cooper convertible.

Report: Detroit automakers pledge $2B investment after Michigan passes tax incentives

Filed under: Government/Legal, Chrysler, Ford, GM, Earnings/FinancialsThe Michigan Economic Growth Authority has approved a series of tax incentives for Ford and Chrysler and expanded previously approved incentives for General Motors. Between a tax break engineered to help GM build a 900-job electric-vehicle battery facility in Warren and another to keep 4,000 people at work in the company's Renaissance Center headquarters, The General is looking at a considerable stack of incentives. According to The Detroit Free Press, the company has been granted a total of $757 million in potential tax breaks that hinge on the automaker keeping a total of 30,000 people at work.

But that's a drop in the bucket compared to what Ford and Chrysler walked away with. Ford was given a 15-year, $909 million credit. As part of that deal, FoMoCo has to retain 28,000 workers. Around $414 million of that tax break is geared toward helping Ford pump $850 million in to a slew of plants spread around Michigan.

Chrysler, meanwhile, took the incentive cake. The smallest of the big three was awarded $1.3 billion in incentives over 20 years geared at keeping 20,000 people at work. The tax breaks surround everything from upgrades to the company's Sterling Heights facility to work required to prepare its Dundee facility to manufacture the Fiat 1.4-liter Multiair four-cylinder.

All told, the tax breaks will reportedly allow the big three to invest a combined $2 billion in their respective Michigan facilities.

Ferrari World: Opening day images [w/video]

Filed under: Etc., Ferrari, Toys/Games, Middle East
That's not a rendering, it's Ferrari World Abu Dhabi from above - Click above for high-res image gallery

You may never get the chance to strap yourself behind the wheel of a real live Formula 1 racing car festooned with all manner of Prancing Horses. We feel your pain, but perhaps the next best thing would be a trip to Ferrari World, which just opened its doors to paying guests in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

If you're thinking that no theme park could possibly give you the kinds of thrills you'd get behind the wheel of the real thing, well, you might be right. That said, no street car ever produced in Maranello is capable of accelerating to 60 miles per hour in about two seconds flat, which is exactly what the roller coaster Formula Rossa puts its passengers through on its way to a 150-mile per hour top speed. That equals 1.7 Gs of acceleration force, by the way.

The exterior of the park is modeled after the side profile of a Ferrari GT, and the roof has a total surface area of 200,000 square meters (2,200,000 sq ft) with a perimeter of 2,200 meters (7,200 ft). One-hundred-sixty feet below that roof, which is festooned with the largest Prancing Horse ever created (see above), sits 86,000 square meters (930,000 sq ft) of floor space. That makes Ferrari World the largest indoor theme park on the planet.

Naturally, there will be other attractions for those looking for slightly less thrilling kinds of fun, including a plethora of movies (some in 3D), and a ride that takes you through the inner workings of a V12 engine. You can also drive a Ferrari 250 California Spyder though an exhibit that shows you the best that Italy has to offer while you let the kiddies have their kicks learning how to drive Junior Grand Prix race cars.

Finally, what Ferrari theme park would be complete without bevy of places to buy your officially licensed gear? Not to mention a slew of fine dining locales with which to fill your gullet? The price to get in is just 225 AED, a little over $60 U.S. Check out our high-res image gallery below and hit the jump for a behind-the-scenes video.

The challenge for GM is multiple. Video: Ferrari 612 GTS Pavesi one-off brings the T-top back to Maranello

Ferrari 612 GTS Pavesi - Click above to watch the videos after the jump

If you're up on your latest cop dramas, you'll notice that Tom Selleck has not only got his mustache back, but he hardly looks like he's aged a day. Never mind that it's been decades since Magnum PI. But it's also been nearly that long since Ferrari made a GTS.

Those three letters are Maranello-speak for "targa" (dare we use the term on anything but a Porsche without getting a cease-and-desist letter?), and they went the way of the dodo after the 355 was phased out. Since then, it's been full convertibles or fixed-roof coupes, and nothing in between. Until this one came along, that is.

Called the 612 GTS Pavesi, this car is reportedly the latest product of Ferrari's in-house customization program. It's based on the 612 Scaglietti, and features a pair of removable carbon-fiber roof panels up top, a unique two-tone silver and black paint scheme, a revised front end and a reported output boost of 20 prancing horses to bring it up to 550 horsepower (possibly due to the custom Tubi exhaust installation). No word on who the owner is, but Pavesi is the name of an Italian producer of go-kart engines. Whoever it is, you can bet he or she paid handsomely for the privilege. Follow the jump for a closer look in a pair of spy videos.

Report: GM announcing $190M investment in Lansing to build Cadillac ATS

Filed under: Sedan, Plants/Manufacturing, Cadillac, Luxury

We now know exactly where General Motors will build its new small Cadillac. The company has announced that it will be investing $190 million into its Grand River Assembly facility in Lansing, Michigan so that the plant can produce the ATS. The company says that the move will provide work for around 600 people, though at this point, it's unclear whether those workers are in addition to the 1,133 workers currently employed at the facility. Right now, the plant builds six models, including all of the variants of the CTS as well as the SRX.

The Grand River Assembly announcement is only the latest in a series of investments that GM has announced for a slew of plants in Michigan. Thanks to some generous tax breaks from the Michigan Economic Growth Authority, the automaker has promised to put money into a new battery facility in Warren, and the company's Delta Township Assembly plant is slated for an additional $37 million in upgrades as well.

Review: 2011 Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged

2011 Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged - Click above for high-res image gallery

Prior to our stint with the 2011 Range Rover Supercharged, we enjoyed some time with a Jaguar XKR. The Jag and the Rover have the same supercharged 5.0-liter V8 and about the same six-figure price tag, which led a friend to ask which vehicle we'd prefer to own. Without hesitation, this author's answer is the one you'd willingly take off-road. The supercharged Rover has more than enough power to be an exhilarating drive, is extremely capable off road and has room to spare for family, friends, pets, groceries and golf clubs. It just makes more sense than the Jag. Sense, however, usually doesn't factor in when you're making a four-wheeled wish list, so we took our friend for a ride, after which he hopped out with a smirk and said, "I'd take the Rover, too..."

This particular Landie is the latest iteration of Land Rover's most famous sport utility vehicle. Sold alongside the same model with a naturally aspirated version of its 5.0-liter V8, the Supercharged is perhaps not as visually athletic to behold as the Range Rover Sport, or the Jaguar XKR for that matter, but it's just as powerful as both and can carry more cargo. Which makes the 2011 Range Rover Supercharged an Alex Trebec-approved answer to the clue, "A $102,365 vehicle famous for off-roading that does things on road you didn't know it could."

Marchionne admits Fiat would perform better without its home country?

Fiat claims that it is on pace to earn two billion euros ($2.8 billion in U.S. funds) in 2010. Good news to be sure, but Reuters reports that CEO Sergio Marchionne says that the company's five factories in Italy contribute exactly zero percent of that profit due to the country's rigid unions. In fact, the CEO claims that Fiat loses money in it's Italian factories, saying "Fiat would do more if it took Italy out from its results. We cannot continue to manage operations at a loss forever."

Marchionne claims that the problem with the Italian unions is so bad that all five factories can't match the productivity of the company's one Polish plant. But the outspoken CEO isn't banking on guilt to gain concessions from organized labor; instead he's offering up $28 billion worth of investment within the country if the union becomes more flexible. For example, if the unions agree to cut back on breaks, Marchionne claims that he's willing to (eventually) pay them more for their sacrifice.

Fiat even gave a name to it's push to make the country more cost-competitive. It's called Fabbrica Italia (Factory Italy), and the aim is to bring the boot-shaped country's manufacturing competitiveness in-line with that of the country's neighbors. So far, Fiat has seen mixed success from unions, with some plants voting in the changes and others still standing in opposition.

Consumer Reports: 2010 Reliability scores as predictable as Asian cars are... reliable

Filed under: Acura, Audi, BMW, Buick, Cadillac, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GM, GMC, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jeep, Kia, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche, Scion, Subaru, Toyota, Volvo

Consumer Reports has released its annual reliability scores for the automotive industry. The 2010 edition reads like the 2009 report... which reads like the 2008 publication, which reminds us of the 2007 version that was similar to the 2006 release. Asia is once again at the head of the class while America has reportedly made great strides and Germany is a mixed bag.

Even with a recent rash of recalls, Toyota (along with Scion and Lexus) is still near near the top of CR's reliability chart. Honda and Acura are also listed as producing highly reliable vehicles, with only the four-cylinder Accord and TSX receiving average ratings. Nissan had a strong showing despite the fact that its Cube, in the first year it has appeared in this report, received a below average score. The Nissan Titan was also hit as being below average. The rest of the lineup however, was rated average or better, including the entire Infiniti model line. Subaru, Hyundai and Kia all had good scores as well, with only Subie's WRX falling below average.

The U.S. automakers made major improvements for 2010. Eighty-three percent of the Chevrolet lineup received scores of average or better. In total, nearly 70 percent of the entire General Motors family is rated at average or better. Ford is the top domestic manufacturer on the list though, with 90 percent of its lineup being given ratings of at least average. That figure is inclusive of the Lincoln brand. It's not all good news in the states unfortunately as none of the Chrysler products were able to receive a rating higher than average.

Reliability for European cars has always been an journey filled with ups and downs. The 2010 reliability scores are no exception. Porsche and Volvo are near the top of the industry while Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi are among the worst. BMW was certainly not helped by its N54 engine, Mercedes has six of 13 models receiving below average ratings and Audi got the same ratings for 75 percent of its lineup. On the flip side, the Porsche Boxster has the highest rated reliability in the entirety of the report.

Check out the full press release after the jump.

New Bentley Motors Deal Sure Beats Free Floor Mats

Can you imagine sliding across the leather seat of a Bentley wearing a handmade suit and silk shirt? Bentley Motors of North America thinks that image might entice you to buy one of its luxury cars. Bentley recently announced a deal with a bespoke tailor, Astor & Black Custom Clothiers, to throw in a handmade suit with every car it sells.
A quick perusal of Astor & Black's website reveals an interesting parallel between the clothier and the carmaker. The clothing company, founded by a 21-year-old in 2004, already offers "packages," similar to the way options are grouped in the auto business. For example, the  "Platinum Package," offering three custom-made suits (plus various shirts and silk ties) sells for $5,500. Of course, that's not even the sales tax of a new 2010 Bentley Continental GT whose base price of $182,800 would bring the sales tax to about $17,745.

Chrysler engineers have taken the 2011 Challenger SRT8 up a notch or two with a new 6.4-liter V8 that produces 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque while delivering 15-20 percent better fuel economy than the outgoing 6.1-liter V8.

Rumormill: Chevy working on Aveo-based crossover

2011 Chevrolet Aveo - Click above for high-res image gallery

According to the blokes over at Autocar, Chevrolet's Korean arm is furiously working on turning the latest Aveo into a five-door, five-passenger crossover. This CUV version of Chevy's subcompact, which just recently began production in Seoul, South Korea with sales slated for early 2011, will reportedly sport a stretched version of the platform and will be offered in both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive flavors.

Upscale interior bits and pieces are apparently being borrowed from the European Opel parts bin, which should mean good things for the Gamma II-based cute 'ute. Other higher-end specs include a next-gen digital display grafted into the dash that is apparently going to filter across the rest of the Chevrolet lineup.

In related news, the British magazine is also reporting that the four-door sedan version of the new Aveo is likely to be shown off at the next Detroit Auto Show in January. Will a crossover join in on the Aveo's time in the spotlight? We'll be there in DSLRs in tow either way.

Rattner: GM and Chrysler will be "gushing profits"

Filed under: Government/Legal, Chrysler, GM, Earnings/Financials

General Motors and Chrysler LLC will lead automakers to "gushing profits" when annual U.S. sales reach 15 million vehicles, said Steven Rattner, the former head of the federal government's auto task force, on Bloomberg TV last Friday.

"This industry has been restructured to make money," Rattner said to Bloomberg. At 15 million vehicles a year, "they will be gushing profits." That 15 million level is expected to be reached at mid-decade, according to predictions by companies like Toyota and GM.

A pace of 15 million vehicles is needed "simply to accommodate new drivers and the aging of the fleet," Rattner said. "It will happen, it's only a question of when."

Rattner recently published a book about his experience titled: Overhaul: An Insider's Account of the Obama Administration's Emergency Rescue of the Auto Industry.

Rattner also this month had to agreed to a ban from the securities industry as a result of a Federal investigation into charges he directed over $1 million in illegal kickbacks to New York State pension fund officials while he was a partner in Quadrangle Group, the post he had before being recruited by the White House.

Rattner, 58, led President Barack Obama's auto task force from February 2009 until July last year, after GM emerged from a bankruptcy backed by $50 billion in government aid.

General Motors is expected to launch its initial-public offering of stock as early as next month, while Chrysler is expected to to take itself public some time next year.

Video: Chevy Cruze used to play live action game of Pac-Man

Filed under: Sedan, China, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Chevrolet, GM
2011 Chevrolet Cruze playing a full-size game of Pac-Man - Click above to watch video after the jump

The 2011 Chevrolet Cruze is a nimble, compact sedan that could potentially turn into a top seller for General Motors. Apparently, it's also a fan of classic video games. Well, at least the Chinese ad agency that dreamed up this interesting ad for it certainly is. A large room serves as the stage for a full-size representation of the Pac-Man universe. A white Chevy Cruze plays the part of Mr. Pac-Man while a series of Black Cruzes represent the ghosts.

The video is well made but could use a little more substance beyond the driving and background music. However, the song will be with you all day. A bit of a warning though, the song has a few swears in it, which is funny because either the ad agency didn't notice them or just doesn't care. Also, the ghosts should be multi-colored, and it would have been really hilarious if they were old Cavaliers.

Check out the commercial after the jump. If you end up enjoying the music, the name of the band is The League and the song is called "F* RNR".

Warning: Possible NSFW language.

Monday Recall Roundup: October 25, 2010

Each Monday, Edmunds takes a look at the most recent recalls published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA's recall coverage is extensive, addressing everything from tractor trailers to motor homes. We pore over this coverage and whittle it down, spotlighting only those recalls that are of pressing concern to owners of passenger cars and trucks.
Of note this week are big recalls issued by both Honda and Toyota concerning defective brake master cylinders. Volvo and Chrysler have also announced recalls; Volvo's concerns a faulty front airbag, while Chrysler's concerns a defective power steering hose. The complete list of recalls follows after the jump.

Report: Dodge version of Alfa Giulietta coming for 2012

Filed under: Etc., Chrysler, Dodge, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Rumormill
Alfa Romeo Guilietta - Click above for high-res image gallery

According to the latest reports, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta will serve as the basis for the Dodge Caliber's successor, and it's set to arrive in late 2011 as a 2012 model. USA Today credits Sergio Marchionne, CEO of Chrysler and Fiat, with the proclamation that some form of Giulietta will wind up as a Dodge. Considering last year's five-year plan that shows the Caliber discontinued after 2011, Chrysler will need something to fill its place in showrooms.

Refreshes will carry the venerable LX cars, and the Sebring has been transformed into the more promising 200, but those moves are mere stopgaps. Without a small car to sell against its domestic rivals, Chrysler and Dodge will be at a significant disadvantage. Fiat has expressed its desire to expand its stake in Chrysler beyond its 20 percent level, and the only way that's going to happen is if the automaker succeeds Stateside. Enthusiasts have looked longingly across the Atlantic at the Giulietta, and if the car connects as well with the public at large and carries the right blend of quality and verve, it could be a boon for Chrysler.

Consumers Secure in Their Smart-Shopping Skills, but Really Hate to Haggle

A majority of people think of themselves as smart car-shoppers but not good negotiators, according to a survey by CarMax, the used car superstore. The poll of 1,000 people found that while 59 percent of respondents thought they were smart shoppers, only 13 percent thought of themselves as good "hagglers." Another 11 percent said they were "data-crunchers," 7 percent were "worry warts" and 4 percent agreed that they were "impulse buyers."
The survey is certainly good news for CarMax, since it has a no-haggle policy on both the used cars it sells and on the cars it buys from consumers or takes as trade-ins. The company, with stores in 25 states, is mainly known for used cars, although it does sells new cars in some locations.

Farmer Knows Best: Pickup sales boosted by booming agrarian economy?

Through the first nine months of 2010, the auto industry is on pace to increase sales by 10 percent versus 2009, and pickup trucks are leading the charge. Bloomberg reports that bedded haulers are up 14 percent on the year, led by increased demand from the farming industry. Farmers have seen their revenues increase by $9 billion over last year, with both prices and demand rising in part because of droughts in Russia and Canada. Farmers are using their new-found dollars to invest in their businesses, and trucks are among the biggest and best tools in the box barn.

Automakers are beneficiaries of this investment, as truck sales climb and profits soar. Analyst Joe Barker of IHS Automotive claims that automakers can make up to $15,000 on each pickup sold, a figure that holds firmest when incentives are down. And with sales up, incentives have dipped. Edmunds shows that trucks have an average MSRP of $34,235, or about $2,000 higher than in 2009. Supply and demand really does work.

The biggest recipient of the increased demand for pickups has so far been Ford, which has seen its F-Series pickups jump by 31 percent. Chevy Silverado sales are up 17 percent as well. Even the Toyota Tundra, which has struggled in the U.S. market, is up 21 percent. The Ram appears to be the only truck suffering through the pickup truck boom, with sales down one percent year-over-year.

Maintenance Minder: Take Care of That Safety Recall

Here's a news flash that probably won't surprise you: Most car owners don't respond to recall notices that they get, even if they're safety recalls for a problem with frightening consequences. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 60 percent of the 14 million 1995-2003 Ford Windstars that it recalled have never been repaired. And that recall was for cruise-control switches that could leak into the antilock braking system and cause a fire.
This announcement by NHTSA comes on the heels of yet another Toyota recall, this time for 740,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles to repair a possible faulty brake cylinder. It's frightening to think that the problem in many of these cars won't be addressed. And it's hard to imagine why an owner wouldn't have the problem fixed, particularly since dealerships do the work for free and it usually takes only a short time to do it. If there is an outstanding recall on your vehicle, now's the time to take care of it. After the jump, you can read a few easy steps to get this important task completed.

Canadian dealer association looks to ban right-hand drive cars

The current law in Canada allows for right-hand drive vehicles older than 15 years to be imported into the country, a loophole that allows for the importation of neat foreign iron that includes Japanese kei cars like the Suzuki Cappuccino as well as larger enthusiast cars like the Nissan Skyline. But the Canadian Automotive Dealer Association appears eager to stop the influx of these elderly RHD vehicles. The CADA claims that the cars and trucks, which the group claims are imported from Asian countries, are "dirty and unsafe." The CADA goes further by saying that the vehicles are often used for "street racing and other reckless acts," and it claims that the vehicles are 40 percent more likely to be involved in an accident. The proposed solution for these right-drive nuisances is for the Canadian government to change the antique designation to 25 years to reflect the changes made by the U.S. and Australia.

Critics suggest that the real reason these vehicles are so unpopular with the 3,300 dealers associated with the CADA is that the imported vehicles are nibbling away at their car sales. As the reasoning goes, the older RHD vehicles aren't as safe or as environmentally friendly as newer vehicles, but neither are the left-hand drive vehicles on used car lots all over the country to our north. Hit the jump to read over the CADA's official press release.
