Cadillac Aera Concept, Smart 454 tied for Top Concepts at LA Auto Show Design Challenge *update

Filed under: Concept Cars, LA Auto Show, Cadillac, GM, Design/Style
Cadillac Aera Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery

The focus at the LA Auto Show is on new production vehicles as well as concepts that hint at an automaker's direction for the very near future. One aspect of the show however, looks further into the distance and pushes designers to create their vision of a supplied theme. The LA Auto Show Design Challenge has entered it's seventh year, and for 2010 the designers had to create a 1,000-pound car that was stylish and performance oriented yet also capable of carrying four passengers. The GM Advanced Design team stepped up to the plate and, with their Cadillac Aera Concept, took the top spot. The podium must have been crowded though because the Smart 454 also claimed a victory as the judges declared the competition a tie.

This marks the third time that the group from General Motors has won this challenge, giving them the most wins out of all automakers that enter. The Cadillac Aera Concept hit on all areas that the judges were looking for and, despite the futuristic styling, still carries some recognizable lines from Cadillacs of today.

The Smart 454 took a different approach to this contest, compared to the dark and dramatic Aera. The 454 refers to the weight of the vehicle in kilograms, and it is described as being constructed, or rather knitted out of carbon fiber, by "Smart Granny Robots." Those robots, or SGRs, can turn the carbon fiber into complex shapes, which allows for the varied forms created to be super strong. Even the wheels are carbon fiber, which would allow for less unsprung weight and a strong rolling platform for the 454 WWT to roll on.

You can read more about both the Cadillac Aera Conceptn and the Smart 454 by reading our preview of the design challenge, and you can see them for yourself in the galleries below.

2012 Nissan GT-R Breaks $90K Mark With More Power, Black Edition

Pricing was announced today for the 2012 Nissan GT-R, which gets a number of revisions, a $5,890 increase in price and a new "Black Edition." Set to go on sale early next year, the 2012 GT-R will now start at $89,950 for the Premium model, which will take the supercar past the $90,000 mark once the $1,000 destination charge is added. Still, the GT-R is a relative bargain, considering that it offers performance on par with a Porsche 911 Turbo, which costs about $43,000 more. Nissan also announced the "Black Edition" trim level ($95,100), which adds red-trimmed Recaro seats, red and black interior trim and a dark headliner and unique wheels.
Notable changes to the 2012 Nissan GT-R are new paint colors, a 35-horsepower increase (now 530 hp), refreshed front and rear fascias, LED running lights, improved aerodynamics and lighter 20-inch Rays wheels. The Black Edition features special black six-spoke wheels in place of the Premium model's 10-spoke design.

Motor Trend defends its selection of Chevy Volt as COTY

Filed under: Sedan, Chevrolet, GM, Electric
2011 Chevrolet Volt - Click above for high-res image gallery

The Chevrolet Volt is only a short time away from having a home at dealerships across the country, but like many media outlets, Motor Trend has been thoroughly testing GM's halo car for some time. In fact, MT has been so impressed with the Volt that it just recently name the extended range EV its Car of the Year. That's a big deal for General Motors and its newest darling, but not everyone is happy with the magazine's choice. In fact, outspoken radio show host Rush Limbaugh recently weighed in with not only a bit of criticism for this decision.

This isn't the first time Limbaugh has been less than favorable in his opinion of the Volt. As you may recall, he first lashed out on the electrified sedan back in July. This time, however, Limbaugh questioned Motor Trend's credibility, and in order to make sure both sides of the argument are well-represented, MT's Todd Lassa has issued a rebuttal. Here, Lassa's main point was to reinforce why the Volt won this award, though a few shots are Limbaugh were made, as well. Lassa called the Volt "the biggest automotive technological breakthrough since... I don't know, maybe the self-starter," and then went on to hammer Limbaugh and fellow political pundit George Will for not understanding what makes the Volt so significant. The sleeves are rolled and the claws are out, folks. Head over to MT to read the response for yourself.

Savvy Shopper: Are You In the Car Buyer's Sweet Spot?

You might be in a "sweet spot" where you could buy a new car and actually lower your monthly payments. Car buyers are benefitting from a confluence of two factors: Falling interest rates and rising used-car values. Add to this the fact that dealers are looking for vehicles for their certified pre-owned programs (CPO) and some buyers might be able to move up to new cars a without denting their budgets.
Let's look at an example: Say you have a 2007 Toyota Camry LE  that you bought for $20,000 and financed at 7.4 percent, which was a typical interest rate three years ago. Your payments would be $444 per month. If you traded in your 2007 Camry at a Toyota dealership, you would get about $10,400. You could then buy a new Camry LE for about $21,000, finance it at zero percent, and bring your payment down to $197.

2010 Los Angeles Auto Show: 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV

Model: 2012 Toyota RAV4 EVWhen Available: 2012Price: $42,000 (est.)

Edmunds Says: Everything old is new again. Just ask Toyota, which first introduced an all-electric RAV4 at the 1997 Los Angeles Auto Show. "In the six years of its run, Toyota was able to lease or sell only 1,484 RAV4 EVs," Toyota Motor Sales president and CEO Jim Lentz said today. "Enthusiasts loved it. Mainstream buyers -- not so much." But times and technologies change, and Toyota today debuted what it calls its "second-generation Toyota RAV4 EV ... powered by Tesla" (the Palo Alto electric-car company is supplying the powertrain for the vehicle).  An actual product for consumers is still more than a year away, however. Toyota is aiming to deliver  a "fully engineered" vehicle in 2012, with an as-yet undisclosed price and a target range of 100 miles, but with an actual range that will depend on such issues as battery design and size. Until then, Toyota is running a "Phase Zero" demonstration and evaluation program with 35 converted-to-electricity RAV4 vehicles.

LA 2010: Toyota RAV4 EV, powered by Tesla, hits the stage

Filed under: LA Auto Show, SUV, Toyota, Electric
Toyota RAV4 EV - Click above for high-res image gallery

Proudly "Powered by Tesla," the brand-new Toyota RAV4 EV made its debut at the LA Auto Show today, and it's pretty much what you'd expect: a current-generation RAV4 with the heart of a Tesla Roadster. Or maybe a Model S. In any case, one of Silicon Valley's electric cars. As we've known, Tesla's role in the partnership is to develop the powertrain - including the battery, power electronics module, electric motor, gearbox and software - for Toyota's popular CUV.

The RAV4 EV has a long history, as long-time plug-in vehicle fans are well aware. The first-gen version arrived in 1997 and was available for six years. Toyota said today that it sold or leased 1,484 units during that time - and that nearly 750 of them are still in operation - but could never make them a mainstream hit like the Prius. Making these alternative-power vehicles isn't that difficult, said Jim Lentz, Toyota Motor Sales' president and chief operating officer, the hard part is bringing them to mainstream customers.

This is the goal of the RAV4 EV, which is scheduled to hit the market in 2012. The initial batch of test vehicles, the so-called Phase Zero machines, are already achieving 100 miles of range, but Toyota engineers are working hard to make sure that the Phase One vehicles (i.e., the next batch) will be able to reach that number no matter what the climate or outside condition is - or, in the words of the press release, "in a wide range of climates and conditions." The engineering team is also focused on drivability and making the electric CUV feel, "as close to a conventional RAV4 as possible." We'll have a more complete post about the RAV4 EV later, but for now you can find plenty more information on Toyota's dedicated RAV4 EV website and check it out from every angle in the gallery below.

Next-Gen Cadillac Escalade spotted on the wall? *UPDATE

Filed under: Concept Cars, SUV, Cadillac, Design/Style, Luxury

General Motors was busy celebrating the 10th anniversary of the company's North Hollywood Advanced Design Center last night, even going so far as to unveil the Cadillac Urban Concept to mark the occasion. While the futuristic-looking concept is interesting enough in its own right, our curiosity has been piqued by what was on the wall behind the design study. Look close, and you'll see one big, hulking SUV the likes of which we've never seen before. Could this be our first look at the next-generation Cadillac Escalade? It's entirely possible. The big, body-on-frame beast hasn't received a significant update since 2007.

With its over-sized grille, fender arches and C-pillar, it's apparent that this this is little more than a design concept, though it could give us a peak into where Cadillac envisions its big-money SUV heading in the near future. Head over to the GM Inside News forum for another look. Thanks for the tip, Ed!

UPDATE: We're told that this is in no way the next Escalade. Instead, the vehicle you see above is just one of many designs that the Advanced Design Center showed off as part of its portfolio of recent work. That means that we won't be seeing this machine on the road any time soon.

10 Best-Selling Vehicles for October, 2010

If you're about to buy a new car, being up to speed on the sales performance of different vehicles in the market can provide you with helpful insight. If a vehicle is a hot seller, a dealer may be less inclined to negotiate on price. On the other hand, that model gathering dust in the back of the lot may represent a golden opportunity for those seeking the sweetest bargains.
With this in mind, we've published a list showing October's 10 best-selling vehicles. Included is each model's monthly sales total. Keep in mind that our sales figures are more granular than those reported elsewhere -- instead of lumping all Ford F-Series sales into a single number, for example, we report separate numbers for the F-150, F-250, F-350 and F-450.

Inside Line: 2011 Dodge Durango First DriveThe 2011 Dodge Durango is vastly more pleasant to drive than its predecessor, but the competition isn't just going to lay down for its triumphant return from retirement.
Green Car Advisor: Volkswagen E-Golf Prototype Driving ImpressionsIt drives much like most other EVs. It's quiet. Rides nicely and although we didn't get to run at highway speeds, steering seemed nice and firm and the car quite stable, glued to the road by the extra weight of its heavy battery pack.

2011 Ford Edge Tech Testing: MyFord Touch Puts Tech at Your Fingertips

Ford has been on a roll of late, and in more ways than one. The company is making great vehicles almost across the board -- from the perennial best-selling F-150 pickup to the Atlantic-crossing Fiesta compact -- and it's resulted in recent record profits. Plus, Ford received mad respect from the American public for not taking government bailout bucks. But part of Ford's success can also be attributed to the company's aggressive technology tack, which produced the wildly successful Sync system and has also transformed the way automakers and consumers think about in-car electronics.
And competitors -- both domestic and import -- are still playing catch up. The latest example of how the Blue Oval continues to raise the bar in car tech is the MyFord Touch system, which debuted this year on the 2011 Edge and as MyLincoln Touch on the 2011 MKX. As I found while testing the system in an Edge Sport, MyFord Touch is so feature-deep that it takes awhile even for technophiles like me to fully get a grasp on everything and how it operates.

2011 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet Teased Before L.A. Show Debut

Nissan will debut its 2011 Murano CrossCabriolet at the L.A. Auto Show on Wednesday, but has decided to give us all a sneak peak of the world's first [only?] all-wheel drive crossover cabriolet today. In English, this is a car-based SUV with its roof removed and replaced with a convertible soft top. Unlike many of the Photoshop versions of this car, the Murano CrossCab actually looks pretty cool, maybe in a modern dune-buggy sort of way. The sole photo released is above.
Currently available in the U.S. only as a four-door hatch, Nissan is promising that the two-door 2011 Murano Cross Cabriolet will provide room for four adults (rare in the world of ragtops), a premium leather interior, and space for golf bags or luggage even with the top down. No pricing has been announced yet, but expect it a fair ways north of the standard Murano's $28,500 base sticker. According to Nissan, the 2011 Murano CrossCabriolet will go on sale in early 2011.

Report: LA Chrysler dealer to get first Fiat 500

Fiat 500 in Rosso - Click above for high-res image gallery

There will soon be 200 stand-alone Fiat dealers primed to sell the diminutive 500, but Motor Village of Los Angeles will reportedly be the first. The corporate-owned dealership in LA will be the first store to sell the ultra-compact hatch when it re-opens in January of 2011. The dealership, which sells all Chrysler brands over three floors of space plus parking on the roof, will function as the test-bed for a myriad of different processes, displays, functions and furnishings.

Chrysler has owned the LA dealership for five years, but the addition of a separate Fiat saloon enabled a refresh that includes an employee cafeteria, play room for kids and a cafe for car shoppers. And soon enough, a bunch of shiny new 500 hatchbacks.

First Drive: 2011 Dodge Charger
The good news is that Chrysler is alive and at least somewhat well, and that the new 2011 Dodge Charger eclipses the outgoing model in major ways. Could the 2011 Charger be enough to stoke the fire for a Dukes of Hazzard reunion?

GM Touting Computing Power in 2012 Buick Regal

For all you tech geeks out there, GM has released details of the computational speed of the engine control processor in its upcoming 2012 Buick Regal. If you read the raw specs on the processor (three megabytes of memory and a 128 MHz clock speed) they'd probably only sound impressive in terms of a 1995 Pentium chip. Unlike that early Windows machine, the Regal's Qorivva MPC5566 chip is a 32-bit processor, and being able to reliably perform 125 million operations per second actually makes it an underhood powerhouse in the automotive industry.
Automotive electronics have come a long way in the last 20 years, considering that GM's first processor in the 1980s operated at only 1 MHz (one million operations per second), and used just 4 kilobytes (0.004 megabytes) of memory. This is comparable with what went to the moon on the Apollo mission, as that spacecraft's guidance computer operated at 1.024 MHZ and used 2 kilobytes of memory. Also consider that the Regal's 128MHz chip is plenty quick enough to handle multiple individual combustion events, even with the engine running at its maximum speed of 6,350 rpm.

Maintenance Minder: Stinky Cars, Odor Eaters and Fresh-Scent Fuzz Busters

The overwhelming aroma of the pine trees dangling from the rearview mirror may be a thing of the past. We are entering a bold new age of auto-odor elimination. A host of new products is available to mask -- nay, eliminate -- anything from old fries under the driver's seat to ancient cigarette smoke to the unfortunate result of Old Shep's motion sickness.
The subject came to mind because our 2004 Toyota Prius long-term test car had developed a decidedly funky smell. Different sniffers described it in different ways, but one person said it smelled like hay. (I thought this was funny because he had been born and raised in the city, far from any bales or lofts.) An editor attended a Meguiar's event and got a sample bottle of its Odor Eliminator ($10.56 from Amazon), so I decided to give it a test drive.

A Mini Cooper Decked Out in Mod-Rocker Stripes Is Yours for the Right Bid

The clock began ticking on Thursday, but you still have roughly 29 days, one hour and 19 minutes to get your bid in on a fabulous -- and decidedly eye-catching -- 2009 Mini Cooper designed by British mod-rocker Paul Weller. Proceeds from the auction will go to two charities that Weller selected: Nordoff Robbins, a U.K. music therapy organization, and War Child, an international charity that protects children from the brutal effects of war and its consequences.
The car, donated by Mini, has 17-inch Crown Spoke alloy wheels, black leather upholstery, Bluetooth, front heated seats and the carmaker's Chili Pack of options that includes floor mats, fog lamps, chrome bumper inserts, roof spoiler and sports suspension. In addition to the bold pink and brown stripes across its body, the car is finished with a single silver line running up the hood and over the roof. The colors, Weller says, come from a Ben Sherman shirt he designed.

2011 Ford Fiesta Makes Appearance in 'The Sims 3'

Ford and Electronic Arts (EA) have announced that a 2011 Fiesta will make a virtual appearance in "The Sims 3." Players can choose their Fiesta's color and whether it appears as a hatchback or sedan. The car is free to download on the Sims website as part of the "Urban Streetscape" package, which also includes: Fiesta urban style graffiti, a "Never Get Lost Again" street sign, a "Maid o' Meter" parking space with meter, a "Hot stuff crossing" sign and "Street Struttin'" streetlight sign.

This isn't the first time that a Ford vehicle has made an appearance in a non-racing video game. Ford says that the Ford Edge, Mustang, Escape Hybrid, Focus and Fusion were downloaded more than 8 million times in "The Sims 2." More recently, the 2010 Lincoln MKT made a cameo appearance in "Alan Wake" for the Xbox 360. This extra publicity may potentially translate to more sales for Ford. According to an internal EA study, 28 percent of Sims players drive Ford vehicles in real life.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco Garners 42 MPG EPA Hwy Rating

General Motors is crowing about the official fuel economy numbers for the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze Eco model, and it's not unjustified. According to today's press release, the Cruze Eco has received an EPA mpg rating of 28 city/42 hwy with its standard six-speed manual transmission (26/37 mpg with the optional six-speed automatic). GM claims the Cruze Eco's highway fuel economy beats its segment competitors (see GM's charts after the jump). The Cruze Eco carries an MSRP of $18,895 (including destination charge), and it will go on sale in January.
To improve fuel economy, the Cruze's engineers focused on aerodynamic performance, mass optimization and powertrain enhancements. The refinements in each area paid big dividends towards the car's overall efficiency, while providing engineers with valuable information to help enhance the efficiency of future Chevrolet models. "We left no stone unturned or piece of sheet metal un-weighed," said Chuck Russell, vehicle line director.

Rumormill: Audi working on A9 super sedan?

Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Audi, Rumormill, LuxuryThe updated A8 is already here and the new A7 is on its way, but could a new Audi super sedan be just around the corner? Folks in the homeland of the four-ringed automaker are speculating that a Porsche Panamera-derived range topper is on the horizon, and that it will be dubbed the Audi A9.

According to Germany's AutoZeitung, the A9 will be offered with a choice of either rear-wheel drive(!) or the familiar Quattro all-wheel drive setup, the Audi A9 would also be available as a gas-electric hybrid. The power output could climb to 500 horsepower.

This is all just rumor at this point, but it would certainly be interesting to if the surging Audi brand can successfully float this many high-dollar products. We've seen what it can do with the premium luxury sedan thanks to the wonderful new A8, and we're we're big fans of the R8 in all its flavors, but is there enough room at the top for an A9 as well? Check out the complete rendered image at AutoZeitung and then have your say in 'Comments.'

Free Maintenance Now Standard on 2011 Lincoln Vehicles

Lincoln announced today that its free maintenance program will now come standard on all its 2011 vehicles. The Lincoln complimentary maintenance program covers oil and filter changes, tire rotations and multipoint inspections for four years or 50,000 miles, which is the duration of the warranty. Lincoln was the first domestic automaker to offer free maintenance earlier this year, but only as a promotional incentive. The coverage is fully transferrable to a second owner.
This free maintenance is what we at Edmunds consider intermediate coverage, in that it includes scheduled services but not wear-and-tear items such as brake pads and wiper blades. Though the mileage duration varies from one automaker to the next, the coverage is similar to that offered by Cadillac, Volkswagen, Saab, Scion and Toyota. The program applies to both leased and purchased Lincoln vehicles.

Pagani Zonda RAK commissioned by German dealership

Pagani Zonda RAK - Click above for image gallery

Few cars can hold a candle to the immense performance capabilities of the Pagani Zonda. Few can touch the number of versions that have come along the way, either. First came the C12, then the C12 S, the C12 S 7.3, the Zonda F, the Zonda R Clubsport and roadster versions of just about each one. But that's not even accounting for the special editions - often limited in production to a single example - that have followed since.

The Cinque and the Cinque Roadster have been followed by the PS, Uno, Tricolore, HH and most recently the 750. Each has been built to the exacting specifications of the wealthy client who's commissioned them, and now there's another: the Zonda RAK.

Like previous editions, the Zonda RAK is distinguished by its unique color scheme: bright yellow in this case, covering the body, the brake calipers and even the top-stitching on the interior. It's otherwise mechanically similar to the five-of-a-kind Cinque edition, packing a 700-horsepower version of the AMG-sourced V12 engine.

The Zonda RAK was reportedly commissioned by a dealership in Germany - Auto Salon Singen - which is putting it up for sale at €1.85 million, equivalent to over $2.5 million. If you've got the cash sitting around it can be yours. Or of course Automobili Pagani would be glad to create one to your tastes.

BREAKING: Chevrolet returns to open-wheel, supplying Penske for 2012 IndyCar

Filed under: Motorsports, Chevrolet, GM, Racing

It's official: Chevrolet has announced a return to open-wheel racing, and will supply V6 engines to Team Penske for the 2012 IndyCar Series. Longtime open-wheel fans will remember that the Bowtie brand supplied engines for Indy-style racing from 1986 to 1993, and then again from 2002 to 2005. The return was a rumor earlier this week, but General Motors made the announcement this morning and offered a glimpse at what's in store.

The new engine, which is being developed by General Motors and Ilmor engineering, will be a twin-turbocharged, direct-injection 2.4-liter V6 running on E85 fuel. Aluminum will be used for the block and cylinder heads, but other technical specs are not yet available.

Penske is the first team to fully commit to an entire Chevrolet-powered lineup for 2012. However, in accordance with the rules of the series, the engine will be available to any teams interested.

Video: Travis Pastrana's last ever rally race

Highlights from Travis Pastrana's last race in a Subie - Click above to watch video after the jump

The last of a sideways era occurred when Travis Pastrana drove his final rally races behind the wheel of a Subaru this past weekend. We didn't know it at the time, but the U.S. Rallycross championship double header held at New Jersey Motorsports Park on Saturday and Sunday would be the last time anyone got to see Pastrana drive his iconic Impreza rally car. The jack-of-all-tail-out trades is moving to NASCAR next year and will ditch his Subaru for a Toyota. He'll be driving in the Nationwide Seriesfor the newly formed Pastrana-Waltrip team.

Thankfully, we have some video highlights of last weekend's U.S. Rallycross races that focuses on Pastrana. So this is your last chance to watch the rally driver with the most X Games medals, the guy who jumped his car over 250 feet onto a floating barge last year, and the dude who recently smashed the Mt. Washington Auto Road record, do his thing behind the wheel of a 550-horsepower Subaru. Here on out, It's all left turns for Pastrana.

For those who care, Pastrana finished fourth in both Saturday and Sunday's races, which secured him enough points to finish third in the 2010 U.S. Rallycross Championship points standings. Check out the video after the jump.

Boomers Feel Ignored by Automakers in the Design of Future Vehicles

Forty percent of all car buyers are 60 years old and older, but the needs of these baby boomers are not being addressed by car designers, according to RDA Group's 2010 Auto-Ideation study. These unmet needs range from a desire for better fuel economy to improved safety features that would prevent such problems as unintended acceleration. The study compiled a list of 500 unmet vehicle needs.
Boomer drivers want vehicles with active safety features, good visibility and ease in entry and exit, the RDA Group study said. Instead, carmakers design cars that target the needs of the younger generation, which are seen as a more exciting market. However, there are more than 50 million people in the U.S. who are 60 and older.

It's been an achingly long, three-year slog up until this point, but Chevrolet has finally taken the wraps off the production version of the 2011 Camaro Convertible ahead of its big day at the LA Auto Show.

The somewhat small images posted on Facebook give us our first view of the drop-top pony car with its canvas roof in place, but other than that, the 'vert is exactly what you've come to expect. Both V6 and V8 models will be available at launch, with the six-pot RS putting out 312 horsepower and the range-topping LS3-equipped SS producing 426 ponies. Sales are set to begin this March, with an entry-level price tag of around $30,000.

What GE's 25,000 EV Car Purchase Means to You

GE's announcement today that it will buy 25,000 electric vehicles by 2015 -- including an initial purchase of 12,000 plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt cars -- is clearly a coup for General Motors, and a smart play by a company that's synonymous with electrification. But the purchase also will have an impact on the driving public at large, in the form of faster introduction of electric cars, the possiblity of lower prices and better vehicles, quicker build up of charger infrastructure and more formal and informal consumer education on EVs.
John O'Dell, senior editor of Edmunds' Green Car Advisor, points out that GE's decision is not an altruistic one. GE is a major player in the electric vehicle components market. It makes and markets its own line of EV chargers and recently announced a partnership with California-based Better Place to offer financing for battery purchases for Better Place's battery exchange stations.

Travis Pastrana and Michael Waltrip join forces to form Pastrana-Waltrip Racing Team [w/video]

Pastrana-Waltrip Racing Team - Click above to watch video after the jump

Yesterday we learned Travis Pastrana had officially left Subaru and has teamed up with Michael Waltrip to run a Toyota in the 2011 NASCAR season. What we just found out, however, is that Pastrana is not simply a driver for the Waltrip team - the two have joined forces to create Pastrana-Waltrip Racing. Running in the NASCAR Nationwide series, Pastrana plans to compete in seven races during the 2011 season, followed by 20 more races in 2012.

Pastrana's appeal could give NASCAR a shot in the arm by attracting a raft of new fans to the sport. His racing background is varied, but he has done quite well behind the wheel of a wide assortment of cars, including multiple stints at the annual Race of Champions. Typically, those events involve left and right turns, and thus, Pastrana has pasted reminders on his car not to turn right (seriously).

Check out Travis Pastrana showing off his new Toyota racer in the video after the jump.

Fiat Shows Off Prima Edizione 500 Colors on Facebook

If you weren't sure what Bianco, Rosso and Grigio would look like on a Fiat 500, Fiat is helping with images on Facebook that show off the limited edition Prima Edizione (first edition) model in its initial colors. These early models are reserved for Fiat fans who attended the Club Fiat-Lancia Unlimited annual convention in July and were given the opportunity to place reservations and select their vehicle build number.
We expect to hear more details from Fiat regarding price and availability next week at the LA Auto Show.  In the meantime, take a look at our earlier post for more photos and details. And let us know in the comments which color you like best. I'm leaning towards Rosso myself.

LA 2010: Honda bringing a new electric vehicle concept to the LA Auto Show

Filed under: LA Auto Show, Hybrid, Honda, Electric

We have no details, only the what, when and where: Honda will be bringing a new electric vehicle concept and a plug-in hybrid platform to the LA Auto Show, and they will be revealed on Wednesday, November 17 at 1:20 p.m. PST. Other than asserting its intent to "demonstrate the company's vision for the future of personal mobility and its continued commitment to developing advanced environmental technologies," we haven't heard much of anything about where Honda is going with... well, anything.

We look forward to finding out if the concept is on the production-ready Leaf challenger side, or a full-on green concept in the Jaguar C-X75 vein. Or something in the middle, like an electric NSX. If you'd like to watch the reveal live, Honda will run a live webcast of the event at hondanews.com/live/2010-losangeles. Synchronize your watches... now.

Lotus creeps us out with Metamorphosis campaign [w/video]

Behind the scenes of Lotus' Metamorphosis project - Click above to watch video after the jump

Lotus isn't the first, just the latest, to encase one of its vehicles in the quixotic amber of conceptual art. In this case the project is called The Lotus Metamorphosis, and the aim is to express the company's own reversal in some way that is grander than a press release.

Lotus employed French photographer Gérard Rancinan to conjure some ideas, and he gathered the five concepts from the Paris Motor Show for a photo session that created the images like the one above. The fact that Lotus has admitted that only the Esprit is being developed makes the inclusion of the other four is a bit intriguing. Although we had read it reported elsewhere that Lotus was only working on the Esprit, the company contacted us to say that they are working on all the cars "at various levels." The Esprit is getting massive attention, but with a new car due out every year for the next few years there is necessarily a lot of development occurring on the others as well.

On the art itself, Lotus CEO Dany Bahar said of Rancinan, "I felt instinctively that he would be the perfect person to demonstrate our vision and encapsulate the spirit of our brand with his images." We aren't equipped to judge the art, but we do admit to watching the video after the jump with the same half-howled wonder as Double Rainbow Guy, namely, "What does it meeeeeeeeeeeeean?" If that isn't enough, the presser might explain things.

Report: Automaker R&D spending took huge hit during recession

Filed under: Chrysler, Ford, GM, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen

When the U.S. auto market hit rock bottom late in 2008 automakers were left cutting corners and laying off workers just to stay in business. For General Motors and Chrysler not even the necessary precautions were enough to keep the companies out of bankruptcy court. The industry is still crawling out of the abyss two years later, but have we seen the last of the pain?

Wards Automotive reports that in 2009 automakers from around the globe cut research and development dollars by 14.3 percent over 2008 spending. That's $12 billion dollars in spending that could potentially keep new products and innovations out of dealer showrooms for months or even years. Ford cut its development spending most according to the report, down 32.9 percent year-over-year. GM is next with cuts of 25 percent, followed by Toyota with a 19.8 percent cut and Honda with a 17.7 percent trimming. Of the automakers ranked among the top 20 R&D spenders world-wide only Volkswagen increased spending in 2009.

So will the R&D cuts of 2009 lead to delayed products and technology? In the short-term, no. Ford, which cut spending the most on a percentage basis, has seen its sales skyrocket while VW's U.S. sales have been weak. But over the long haul we're pretty sure that delays are inevitable, because $12 billion in R&D is no drop in the tech bucket.

Video: Back to the Future DeLorean replica participates in Libyan scene recreation

Back to the Future fans recreate the Libyan chase scene - Click above to watch video after the jump

The Puente Hills Mall sits on an unassuming piece of blacktop in City of Industry, California. If you drove by it, you wouldn't give it a second glance... unless you are a keen-eyed fan of Back to the Future. Called the Twin Pines Mall, and later the Lone Pine Mall, it served as the location where Doc met Marty to have him film his newest invention. It's now the 25th anniversary of that film, and fans are gathering for a week-long celebration of their favorite movie.

Someone brought their BTTF DeLorean replica to one of the events being held at the Puente Hills Mall and, with video cameras rolling, recreated the scene where Doc gets shot by the Libyans. Showing up in their VW Bus, they gun down Doc and chase after Marty as he speeds away into the past. Check it out in the video after the jump.
