2010 Los Angeles Auto Show: 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV

Model: 2012 Toyota RAV4 EVWhen Available: 2012Price: $42,000 (est.)

Edmunds Says: Everything old is new again. Just ask Toyota, which first introduced an all-electric RAV4 at the 1997 Los Angeles Auto Show. "In the six years of its run, Toyota was able to lease or sell only 1,484 RAV4 EVs," Toyota Motor Sales president and CEO Jim Lentz said today. "Enthusiasts loved it. Mainstream buyers -- not so much." But times and technologies change, and Toyota today debuted what it calls its "second-generation Toyota RAV4 EV ... powered by Tesla" (the Palo Alto electric-car company is supplying the powertrain for the vehicle).  An actual product for consumers is still more than a year away, however. Toyota is aiming to deliver  a "fully engineered" vehicle in 2012, with an as-yet undisclosed price and a target range of 100 miles, but with an actual range that will depend on such issues as battery design and size. Until then, Toyota is running a "Phase Zero" demonstration and evaluation program with 35 converted-to-electricity RAV4 vehicles.
